lame but i want to write about jens lekman. i think he’s a romantic conceptualist. the way he samples old romantic songs. it’s like that umberto eco quote about the cultivated man being unable to just say “i love you madly” and resorting to quotation, “as barbara cartland would put it, i love you madly” something about a sweet summer’s night on hammer hill reminds me ofheatwave, the trumpet or horn or whatever it is, then the people singing “no no no no no” reminds me of the ending of he’s a rebel (oh my goddd the best ending ever!) and then the point where you realize the “bom bom bom bom bom bom” part is borrowed from walter johnson. i’m going to see a jonathan richman concert tomorrow and it will be perfect. and that amazing line about the fall and mark e. smith in maple leaves. i can’t really explain why that line is so amazing to me, something about the intersection of word games and real emotions and taste and how taste and emotions collide even though you feel like they shouldn’t. even though i think jens lekman does a good job at being post-sincere or whatever, i think his press pictures are lame. they always have birds in them. i have a name for those girls who wear dresses borrowed from “mother” and love french new wave “films” and want to be anna karina and look like they stepped out of an anthropologie catalog and make status updates in french for no good reason and read sylvia plath. i think of them as “vintage sparrows” because girls like that are always really into birds and deers and they stand pigeon-toed and have huge eyes and pretty hair and oh my god just FUCK THEM why does jens lekman have birds in his press photos?
